Islamabad: Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has appointed Gen Raheel Sharif as new Army Chief. He is related to 2 war heroes. He is younger brother of Major Shabbir Sharif, who is the only soldier to have been awarded both the Sitara-e-Jurrat and Nishan-e-Haider. He is also nephew of Major Aziz Bhatti, who embraced Shahadat during the 1965 war and was awarded with the only Nishan-e-Hiader of 1965 war. In a message on Twitter, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif (no relation) confirmed the appointment of Lieutenant-General Raheel Sharif.

Sharif is seen as a moderate who views the militant threat inside Pakistan as just as important as the strategic tussle with India. Sharif has played a big role in convincing the army that the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and assorted militants inside Pakistan are as big a threat (as India).
