NEW DELHI: The Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Saturday met President Pranab Mukherjee to submit his resignation along with the resignation of his council of ministers with a request to dissolve the 15th Lok Sabha, a day after Congress’ crushing defeat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

The president accepted his resignation and asked him to continue as the caretaker premier till the new government takes charge.

Meanwhile, the Indian prime minister-elect Narendra Modi arrived in New Delhi after securing a historic victory for his Hindu nationalist party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Modi will take oath as 14th Prime Minister of India on May 21.
