DHAKA: The Bangladesh Election Commission announced on Monday that general elections will be hold across the country on January 5 next year, rejecting the opposition parties demand to set up a neutral caretaker government to oversee the polls prior to the election date announcement, Dispatch News Desk reported.

The main opposition coalition had demanded Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and transfers power to a non-partisan caretaker administration to oversee the elections before the election date was announced.

However, Hasina rejected the demand and formed a caretaker cabinet to oversee the upcoming elections earlier this month.
