ABUJA: At least 71 persons were killed while 124 sustained injuries in an explosion that occurred at a bus station near the Nigerian capital Abuja on Monday morning, a foreign news agency citing witnesses reported.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but authorities are likely to blame Islamist militant group Boko Haram that have been waging an insurgency in the northeast.

The director of search and rescue operations Air Commodore Charles Otegbade said that the security experts suspect the explosion was inside a vehicle.
